WASHINGTON

A retired Canadian police officer has been charged with alleged foreign interference, according to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Friday.

William Majcher, 60, from Hong Kong, is accused of using "his knowledge and his extensive network of contacts in Canada to obtain intelligence or services to benefit the People's Republic of China," according to RCMP's statement.

"It is alleged that he contributed to the Chinese government's efforts to identify and intimidate an individual outside the scope of Canadian law," said the statement.

It said that Majcher appeared at Longueuil courthouse on Friday by videoconference, and was charged with two counts under the Security of Information Act.

The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) launched an investigation in fall 2021 regarding William Majcher's suspicious activities.

A spokesperson for RCMP told Radio Canada that Majcher works for a firm based in Hong Kong that was collecting information about an individual in Canada.
