Rep. Robert Garcia announces bid for US House Oversight ranking member
Garcia, 47, becomes first Democrat to announce candidacy

WASHINGTON
Rep. Robert Garcia announced his bid Thursday for the top Democratic spot on the US House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
"From the Trump administration’s attacks on the rule of law, weaponizing the government against its critics, and decimating the services our constituents rely upon–there is a clear and immediate threat to our democracy.
"As citizens, patriots, and members of Congress, we must organize, fight back, and defend the principles of freedom, equality, and justice," Garcia said in a three-page "dear colleague" letter.
Garcia, 47, said he is ready to help lead that fight "to ensure we hold those in power accountable and protect democracy for the next generation."
He became the first Democrat to formally announce his candidacy. The House Democratic Caucus plans to hold the election June 24.
