ANKARA

Peru has declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the cities of Lima and Callao following “acts of violence,” the country’s state news agency reported on early Tuesday.

This came as unions of truckers continued their strike against rising fuel prices on Monday.

In an address to the nation, President Pedro Castillo said the measure was taken as some groups reportedly sought to block access to both Lima and Callao provinces.

The curfew will be in effect until the end of Tuesday, according to Andina news agency.

Authorities have called for calm, saying they respect the right to protest but violence should be avoided.
