Peru has declared a state of emergency on its borders as part of the ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration.

“A supreme decree has been approved that declares a state of emergency for the border areas of Tumbes, Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios, and Tacna regions,” Peru’s President Dina Boluarte said at a press conference, according to local Andina news agency.

This decision will enable the implementation of operations by security forces related to border control so as to protect domestic order and constitutional rights, Boluarte said.

"We have seen that day by day our cities are not far from citizen insecurity, individual or organized crime, criminal gangs, violence, and criminality that grows day by day," she said.
