Order restored after deadly riot at overcrowded Mexico prison

ISTANBUL

Authorities in Mexico’s Veracruz state said Sunday that order had been restored at a prison in the city of Tuxpan following a deadly riot that left seven inmates dead and 11 others injured.

In a statement on X, the Veracruz Department of Public Security said those injured in the violence were receiving medical treatment, and that fires set by inmates during the unrest were successfully extinguished.

Videos captured on Saturday showed plumes of smoke rising from the local prison, while footage circulating on social media revealed inmates suffering from burn injuries.

Some prisoners appeared in videos alleging that the riot erupted after a group of inmates resisted pressure from a criminal group known as Grupo Sombra, which they accused of extorting fellow prisoners and their families.

According to the most recent official figures from June, the Tuxpan facility was housing 778 inmates, exceeding its intended capacity of 735.
