One student was killed and at least three others were injured after a shooting Wednesday at a high school in the northwestern state of Washington, according to media reports.

The shooting took place at Freeman High School in Spokane County, and officials responded by putting all schools in Spokane on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

The wounded have been hospitalized and are expected to survive, according to county officials.

Police have arrested the shooter, the sheriff's office confirmed to local newspaper The Spokesman-Review.

Anadolu Agency contacted both the Spokane County Police Department and Sheriff's Office, but they declined to provide further details.

Officials are withholding the identities of the victims and the shooter.

The prevalence of school shootings in the U.S. has been blamed on the widespread availability of guns.

According to New York City-based non-profit group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been over 200 school shootings in the U.S. since 2013 -- an average of nearly one a week.
