WASHINGTON

The Republican-led US House Budget Committee on Friday blocked President Donald Trump's agenda bill from advancing.

The vote was 16-21, marking a major setback for the legislation.

Reps. Chip Roy, Ralph Norman, Josh Brecheen, Andrew Clyde and Lloyd Smucker voted no on the 1,116-page "One Big Beautiful Bill Act."

Ahead of the vote, Trump urged the Republicans to unite behind the bill.

"We don’t need ‘GRANDSTANDERS’ in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

However, the lawmakers warned the tax cuts alone would pile onto the nation’s $36 trillion debt.

Roy said he opposes the bill as it will increase the deficit.

"This bill falls profoundly short. It does not do what we say it does with respect to deficits.

"That’s the truth. Deficits will go up in the first half of the 10-year budget window and we all know it’s true. And we shouldn’t do that. We shouldn’t say that we’re doing something we’re not doing," he said during the hearing.

Roy said that he will vote "no" unless "serious reforms" are made on the bill.

"Something needs to change or you’re not gonna get my support," he added.

The Committee would reconvene on Sunday night at 10 p.m. local time (0200 GMT Monday).
