A gunman was killed and three people injured Monday when a suspect opened fire at a US Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, authorities said.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an individual opened fire at the entrance of the Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen. "Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter," it stated on X.

Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were wounded in the attack, with one victim shot in the knee. All three were taken to hospital for treatment.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the suspect as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda during a news conference, local broadcaster ABC7 reported.

"This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI," the DHS said.

Flights at McAllen International Airport were also briefly affected by this situation. However, it now resumes full operations “following a temporary closure due to off-airport safety concerns,” local police said in a statement.

At a later news briefing, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt later said the administration was "working with the appropriate federal agencies to get to the bottom of what happened," concerning the shooting
