WASHINGTON

Google and its Gmail service were temporarily down Monday with thousands of users across the U.S. affected.

The bulk of outages appear to have taken place in major cities on the west and east coasts, including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Boston, according to the Downdetector website, which tracks website and web service outages. Chicago, Dallas and Houston also appear to be affected. 

Most of the problems being reported on Google and Gmail were login-related, but a smaller sampling of users reported being unable to use Google search.

Google has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
