Explosives are missing from the US' largest Marine Corps base, according to military officials cited by the media on Tuesday.

The base in question, the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County, California, is located some 241 kilometers (150 miles) east of Los Angeles in the southern Mojave Desert.

Officers at the base last week notified the Morongo Basin Station of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department about the missing explosives, according to CNN.

A Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) public affairs official said they are investigating the incident, but gave no information about the quantity or kind of explosives that were missing.
