The EU commissioner for defense and space on Thursday said the bloc should stand by Denmark in its row with the US over Greenland's future.

Responding to a question on possible US invasion of Greenland, Andrius Kubilius said at the World Economic Forum in Davos: "Denmark is part of the European Union. They have some kind of conversations​​​."

"We should support always Denmark," Kubilius added.

US President Donald Trump first expressed his desire to buy Greenland in 2019, which drew a rebuke from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He has now reiterated his desire to acquire the autonomous territory.

"Greenland is a wonderful place. We need it for international security," Trump told reporters on Monday while signing executive orders after returning to the Oval Office.
