WASHINGTON

At least eight children were wounded, including one fatally, in separate shootings across the US city of Chicago over the Labor Day holiday weekend, police said Monday at a news conference.

Four-year-old Mychal Moultry was struck twice in the head when bullets fired outside his home in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the city's South Side flew in through an open window, according to ABC News.

He was shot Friday night while getting a haircut. Moultry was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown rebuked "offenders" for knowing they are being targeted and will cause retribution from some rival gangs.

"Why are you continuing to be around young people -- our children?" said Brown. "That's on you. We will hold offenders accountable, but why are you living a life of crime involving innocent 4-year-olds?”

"Stay away from children if you want to live that life."

"I'm not trying to vilify the victim, but these innocent young children should not be the byproduct of your criminal behavior," he added

The police are offering a $9,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Moultry’s killer.

The ages of the seven other children range between 12 to 18.

Between Friday night and the early hours of Labor Day, nearly 50 people were wounded in shootings, according to a review by ABC News of police incident reports.
