HAMILTON, Canada

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly urged regional stability Tuesday following Iran's attack on Israel.

"I have spoken to colleagues from Israel, Türkiye, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt and the UAE about regional stability following Iran’s attack on Israel over the weekend," Joly wrote on X.

She emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could exacerbate the conflict and lead to its spread throughout the region.

Joly's telephone calls came after Iran launched an airborne attack Saturday on Israel in retaliation for an April 1 airstrike on its diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital. It reportedly fired more than 300 drones and missiles, with almost all intercepted by the air defense systems of Israel and its allies -- the US, France and the UK.

The Iranian force also reportedly seized a commercial ship with links to Israel as it traveled through the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday.
