HAMILTON, Canada

Canada on Monday said it facilitated the departure of thousands of its citizens from the Middle East as the regional security situation remains volatile.

"Since February 28, more than 22,000 Canadians and permanent residents have returned to Canada through direct and indirect routes from the Middle East," said a statement by Global Affairs Canada.

Ottawa organized a series of bus convoys from Israel to Egypt, between March 25 and March 30. Three road movements carried 41 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members. The departures were offered to nearly 6,000 Canadians registered with the government in Israel.

"The Government of Canada has facilitated the departure of more than 1,270 Canadians and permanent Residents from the region to a safe third country," it added.

Urging Canadians remaining in the region to leave by commercial means while available, the statement also warned that further deterioration could limit both travel options and consular services.
