At least two people were killed and two others injured when a small plane crashed into homes in the US state of California on Monday, authorities said.

The crash of the twin-engine Cessna ocurred midday in the suburban neighborhood of Santee, around 20 miles (30 kilometers) northeast of San Diego.

"Two fatalities have been confirmed at this time, two victims were transported to the hospital, condition unknown," said Santee officials on Twitter.

"Power has been turned off in the immediate neighborhood. Debris field spans approx. 1 block," said the tweet.

Three homes suffered "major damage" and two were completely burned, Fire Chief John Garlow told the USA Today newspaper.
