BUENOS AIRES, Argentina 

The death toll in Argentina from the novel coronavirus rose to 1,582 Monday as the pandemic continued to spread in Latin America. 

The country reported 75 fatalities from the virus over the past 24 hours. 

The total number of cases in the country reached 80,447 as 2,632 more people tested positive for COVID-19.  

Despite a partial quarantine in Argentina that has been in effect since March 20, the number of cases and deaths continues to rise. 

Since originating in Wuhan, China in December, the coronavirus pandemic has claimed over 537,480 lives in 188 countries and regions. 

The US, Brazil, India and Russia are currently the worst-hit countries. 

More than 11.59 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries exceeding 6.28 million, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.
