South Africa reported 183 new coronavirus deaths late Tuesday, pushing the death toll to 22,432, the health minister announced.

Zweli Mkhize said 4,011 new COVID-19 infections were also detected in the same period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 821,889.

South Africa has the highest number of COVID-19 cases on the continent.

Health authorities have urged people to adhere to COVID-19 health regulations such as washing hands, wearing a face mask, and keeping social distance.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa warned the country might face a second wave of COVID-19 if people do not follow health regulations. He said there was already a resurgence in some parts of the country.
