A South African lawmaker representing the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has been shot dead during an attempted hijack in Roodepoort, a suburb of Johannesburg, the party said Wednesday.

Sibusiso Radebe was an MP from Gert Sibande district in Mpumalanga.

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele told reporters they have launched a manhunt for suspects linked to the murder.

“It is with grave sadness that the office of the ANC chief whip has received the news of the passing of ANC member of parliament, comrade Goodwill Sibusiso Radebe,” the party said in a statement.
