MONROVIA, Liberia
Thousands of Liberians are observing a national memorial service for the thousands who died of the Ebola virus during the country’s worst health crisis.
Liberians, international partners and diplomats plus families of the dead gathered at Monrovia’s Centennial Memorial Pavilion for the memorial service which coincides with the country’s national holiday – Thanksgiving Day.
The country is focusing on memorializing over 4,000 Liberians who died of the deadly disease.
Ebola, a contagious illness that broke out in Liberia in March 2014, spread across the country forcing almost every institution to close down.
It also led to breakdown of the country’s economy and the made more than 3,000 children orphans.
Liberia was finally declared Ebola-free on Sep. 3 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Today in Liberia, all offices, schools and businesses are closed.
