Ethiopia: Ex-head of Somali faces rights abuse charges

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

Former president of Ethiopia's Somali region Abdi Mohammed Omar appeared before a court Wednesday after he was arrested in his Addis Ababa home on Monday.

Omar was deposed early this month.

He faces numerous charges of extrajudicial detention, killings and torture as well as abuse of power and embezzlement of public funds.

In a press conference over the weekend, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the alleged crimes perpetrated under the watch of the head of the former Somali regional chief were deplorable.

“Inmates were made to come face-to-face with hyenas and lions,” he said.
