YAOUNDE / ISTANBUL

Dozens were feared dead as a section of a copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo collapsed.

Local media reports said as many as 70 people died in Saturday's incident near the city of Kolwezi, Lualaba province.

A video circulating online, shot from afar, showed a large part of the mine collapsing, with those present at the site escaping the danger in panic.

Many workers are also said to be trapped under the rubble, as search and rescue operations continued.

Mining accidents are common in the DRC due to unregulated mines, safety deficiencies, and inadequate infrastructure.
