At least 50 people were killed early Thursday and several others were wounded in an overnight train accident in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a government official announced Thursday.

The incident took place at 3 a.m. (0200 GMT) in Mayibaridi town of Tanganyika province, Humanitarian Affairs Minister Steve Mbikayi said on Twitter.

“On behalf of the government, I offer condolences to the families who have suffered. Meeting in progress with arrangements to be made,” he said.

The official did not elaborate on the reason behind the accident.
