TRIPOLI, Libya

Four people were killed and another 15 injured when an artillery shell struck a summer resort near the Mitiga International Airport in Libyan capital Tripoli, a local medical source said Wednesday.

Mohamed bin Khalil, deputy head of a local field hospital, told Libya’s Alahrar television channel that the shell had struck the resort on Tuesday, killing two women and two children.

Abdelsalam Ashur, deputy interior minister of Libya’s Tripoli-based UN-backed unity government, for his part, said the shell had been fired by relatives of an individual killed in Tuesday clashes between Libyan security forces and an outlawed group.

Beach resorts in the coastal city of Tripoli have recently been overwhelmed by visitors due to soaring summertime temperatures and chronic electricity shortages.
