An alleged coup leader was killed in the northern Ethiopian regional state of Amhara, police said on Monday.

"Tsgie was shot at Zenzelma, 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the regional capital Bahir Dar while trying to run away from the security operation," state-run Ethiopian television reported.

Amhara’s security chief Asaminew Tsige burst into a meeting on Saturday afternoon killing regional president Ambachew Mekonnen and two other officials.

On Saturday, a coup attempt against Amhara regional state government failed, Ethiopian prime minister said on Sunday.

A few hours after the coup attempt was quashed, Ethiopian army chief Gen. Sea’re Mekonnen was killed by his own security guard.

The Ethiopian government said the two incidents were connected and a funeral for the fallen will take place on Tuesday.
