Incident occurred as hundreds of women scampered for food aid, according to eyewitness
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria
At least four people, including women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede during food distribution on Sunday in Nigeria's northeast Bauchi, police and residents said.
Ahmed Wakil, a police spokesperson in Bauchi State, said the stampede happened while many people were waiting at a private company to receive food aid leading to the death of four people.
Ahmed Sani, a resident and witness, told Anadolu the incident occurred as hundreds of women and young people scampered for foods being distributed by a local aid group.
The incident occurred barely two days after some students were injured following a stampede during aid distribution at a university in north-central Nasarawa State.
Nigeria is experiencing a food crisis and economic hardship with inflation hitting all time 31.7% in February according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) last week.
