Three female suspected terrorists were shot dead in an attack on a Kenyan police station Sunday, police said.

Mombassa County Commander Peterson Maelo said the women, dressed in buibui shawls and wearing suicide belts, stabbed two officers and hurled a petrol bomb after getting into Mombasa Central police station on the pretext of reporting a crime.

Two other women were arrested.

The petrol bomb set off a small fire and local news websites carried photographs of police officers escaping from the second floor of the building.

Juma Ali, who lives near the police station, told Anadolu Agency he heard an explosion followed by gunfire.

Police said they are seeking two men who accompanied the women.

Kenya has witnessed a spate of terror attacks from Somalia-based al-Shabaab terrorists. An attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall in September 2013 killed 67 people and a raid on Garissa University in April last year killed 148.
