Iraqi Kurds to send new batch of fighters to Kobani

ERBIL, Iraq

Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government will send a new batch of Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga fighters to battle ISIL in the Syrian town of Kobani, a Kurdish official said Monday.

The new battalion, which would be the third batch of Peshmergas sent since October 2014, is expected to be deployed soon.

"Our Peshmerga fighters in Kobani are tired,” said Cabbar Yaver, secretary general of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs at Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government. "We will send the third round of troops consisting of 156 new fighters."

The first batch of 150 fighters made their way into Kobani through Turkey on Oct. 28. They were replaced by the second batch on Dec. 6.

Kobani has seen fierce battles between Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants and Kurdish fighters since mid-Sept. 2014.

"The third group of troops will travel to Kobani through Turkey," Yaver added.
