KIEV

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Friday that 946 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 1,342 soldiers have been released since the cease-fire with the pro-Russian rebels.

Despite a cease-fire between Kiev and pro-Russian rebels drawn up in a September 5 summit in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, the separatists organized frequent attacks to take over Donetsk Airport.

Unrest in eastern Ukraine has torn the region apart since April, when Kiev launched military operations in the provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk to restore government control after separatists had declared independence in the region.
