At least seven Ukrainian soldiers were killed and nine others wounded on Monday in a pro-Russian separatist attack on the government-held airport in Donetsk, according to a presidential source.

Yuriy Biryukov, an advisor to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, used a social media account to say that separatist rebels launched an attack late on Sunday against  Donetsk Airport in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Counterterrorism Center press office released a statement claiming that the military repulsed the separatists from the airport which remains under the control of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Clashes were reported on Sunday in two other eastern Ukraine towns, Debaltsevo and Rudkovskaya, some 75 kilometers from Donetsk. At least three civilians were killed and five others were injured, according to Donetsk City Municipality.

Despite a cease-fire between Kiev and pro-Russian rebels drawn up in a September 5 summit in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, the separatists have organized frequent attacks to take Donetsk Airport.
