BAGHDAD

Nine people were killed and at least 14 others wounded in a suicide attack on an Iraqi army check point Thursday in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a military source said.

A first lieutenant told The Anadolu Agency that a suicide attacker drove his explosive-laden car into an Iraqi army check point in northern Baghdad. The attack left nine people dead, including three soldiers, and 14 others wounded, including five military personnel.

The Iraqi Commission of Human rights said in a statement Thursday that ISIL had executed professors from the University of Mosul.

The statement did not specify the names or numbers of the killed professors.

“ISIL killed the professors who opposed the group and its acts,” Fadel al-Gharawi, a member of the Commission, said.

Iraq has suffered a security vacuum since June last year, when ISIL stormed Mosul and declared what it called a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. is leading an international coalition which has carried out numerous airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.
