UN resumes food assistance to Syrians

GENEVA

The United Nation's food agency has said it is resuming food assistance to Syrian refugees after having suspended aid to 1.7 million displaced people last week due to a lack of funds.

The World Food Program said in a statement on Tuesday that it had raised more than $80 million after launching a 72-hour campaign to raise funds for food aid via social media.

"By mid-December, Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and  Egypt will have their electronic food vouchers uploaded with an average amount of $30 per family member (to buy food)," it stated.

About 14,000 individuals and private sector donors in 158 countries contributed to the campaign.
