ANKARA
Former coach of Barcelona, Tito Vilanova died of throat cancer on Friday at the age of 45.
“It is with immense sorrow that FC Barcelona announces that Francesc ‘Tito’ Vilanova departed this world today,” the Catalan club said in a statement on its website. “He passed away this afternoon after losing his battle against an illness that had affected him since 2011.”
In sympathy with Vilanova’s family and fans, the club said it would open a space in the main grandstand at the Camp Nou – Barcelona’s home stadium – for people to express their condolences.
After the resignation of Pep Guardiola, Tito Vilanova took the helm in 2012 and led Barca to the Spanish league title in his first season.
