Here’s a rundown of all the news you need to start your Sunday, including a mass shooting in the US' northern California; Venezuela demanding "unconditional respect" for its airspace following US President Trump's threats; and Trump's remarks that airspace above and surrounding Venezuela will be closed "in its entirety."

  • Several injured in shooting in northern California

Several people were hospitalized following a shooting in the US city of Stockton in northern California, according to officials.

"The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting in the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue in Stockton. Several victims have been transported to local hospitals," San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said on US social media company X.

The victims' conditions have not been disclosed.

  • Venezuela demands 'unconditional' respect for its airspace

Caracas criticized US President Donald Trump’s statement that Venezuelan airspace and the surrounding region would be closed as the South American nation demanded “unconditional respect” for the airspace.

A statement by the Foreign Ministry underlined that Venezuela’s airspace is protected under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Referring to an article of the 1944 Chicago Convention, the statement said, “It is clearly recognized that every state has exclusive and absolute sovereignty over the airspace above its territory. The Bolivarian Government declares that Venezuela will not accept any orders, threats, or interventions from any foreign power. No authority other than Venezuelan institutions has the right to interfere with, obstruct, or impose conditions on the use of national airspace.”

  • Airspace above, surrounding Venezuela to be closed 'in its entirety': Trump

US President Donald Trump declared that the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela should be considered "closed in its entirety" in the latest escalation of tensions between Washington and the South American country.

"To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY," Trump said via his social media company, Truth Social.

The move comes after months of expanding US military operations across Latin America, deploying Marines, warships, fighter and bomber jets, submarines, and drones amid speculation that Washington could launch an attack on Venezuela.
