A caretaker government in Bulgaria has been sworn in on Tuesday to run the country until snap elections slated for Oct. 2.

During the oath-taking ceremony, President Rumen Radev said that the country should not be a party to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and called on the government to focus on protecting national interests.

For his part, Galab Donev, the caretaker prime minister, said the government will make efforts to lessen the political tension in the country.

On Monday, Radev dissolved parliament and appointed Donev to lead a caretaker government. The president also announced that the country will head to snap elections on Oct.2

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), which on July 18 was given the mandate to form a government, officially returned it to the president on July 28.

The elections will be the fourth in two years for the country, which has been marred by political instability since Prime Minister Kiril Petkov’s government was toppled in a no-confidence vote in June.
