Germany’s natural gas imports increased by 25.6% in the first nine months of 2019 while its import bill rose by 8.8%, according to data from trade statistics office BAFA on Thursday.
The volume of imports increased to 117 billion cubic meters (bcm) in the January-September period, 25.6% more than a year earlier, the data from BAFA's monthly natural gas report showed.
The country’s importers paid €18.6 billion during this period, marking a 8.8% increase on a year earlier, the data showed.
Germany, one of the world's biggest natural gas importers, mainly imports from Russia, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and Britain via pipelines.
Last year, Germany, the largest natural gas consumer in Europe, imported 9.7% more gas than the year before and raised its import bill by 23.4% to €23.7 billion.
