Norwegian energy giant Equinor and its partners announced on Monday that they have discovered oil and natural gas in the Fram area, approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) north of the Troll field in the North Sea.
An exploration well encountered petroleum in two reservoirs, one containing both oil and gas and the other only gas, the company said in a statement.
Estimated resources range from 0.1 to 1.1 million standard cubic meters, with reservoir quality described as "moderate to very good," it added.
The discovery has been given the preliminary name F-South.
Commenting on the discovery, Geir Sortveit, Equinor's senior vice president for Exploration & Production West on the Norwegian continental shelf, said: "These are discoveries in an interesting area with a well-developed infrastructure."
"In recent years, we have made several discoveries in the neighbourhood, and we plan to further explore the area. We believe that we may encounter more, both oil and gas," Sortveit added.
According to the statement, the licensees will consider tying F-South back to existing or future infrastructure.
Equinor Energy AS holds a 45% stake in the license, while Var Energi ASA owns 40% and INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS has 15%.
