Four people have been killed and 16 remain missing after a typhoon tore through south China's Guangdong Province overnight, local media reported Monday.

State news agency Xinhua reported that a fisherman died as Typhoon Mujigae made landfall in Zhanjiang City on Sunday.

The tornado then hit the city's Shunde District, killing three more people and injuring 80 others, according to the municipal government.

A total of 117 fishermen were rescued in Zhanjiang, but 16 still remain missing after the country's 22nd typhoon this year struck, the city's maritime rescue center announced late Sunday.

Xinhua said storms are expected to last throughout Monday, while Guangdong's relief headquarters elevated the emergency warning system to the highest level at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) Monday morning.

The typhoon also caused widespread electricity blackouts in Zhanjiang, where the water was also cut off.

It coincided with China's weeklong national holiday, forcing tourists visiting Guangxi and Guangdong to change their plans.
