KAMPALA, Uganda

At least 29 people were killed by a cholera outbreak in South Sudan, the United Nations said Friday.

South Sudan officially declared a cholera outbreak on June 23, 2015.

According to a statement released by UNICEF, the cholera outbreak had killed 484 people by the end of June.

The statement also warned that the number of those stricken with the disease could rise.

"Children under five comprise 13 percent of the cases," the statement added.

Last year, South Sudan suffered a lethal cholera outbreak that killed at least 167 people and infected 6,000 others, according to the World Health Organization.

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes rapid and severe dehydration due to excessive vomiting and diarrhea.
