First arrests in Tunisian beach terror attack

SOUSSE, Tunisia

Tunisia has arrested a group linked to last week’s terrorist attack in Sousse, the interior minister said on Monday.

“The first group from the network behind the terrorist operation at Sousse has been arrested,” Mohamed Najem al-Gharsalli said, referring to the attack last Friday that killed 38 people, mostly tourists.

The announcement came at a joint press conference in Sousse with his counterparts from the U.K., Germany and France.

Gharsalli did not clarify how many were arrested but said they were all Tunisian nationals.

He added that an investigation was still seeking to determine if the attacker, student Seifeddine Rezgui, was trained in Libya and reiterated the government’s determination to track all those involved.

The attack on the beach resort would not deter tourists from coming to Tunisia nor other countries’ support for democracy in Tunisia, Gharsalli said.

The Western ministers expressed their commitment to provide security and economic aid to Tunisia.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attack.
