BENGHAZI, Libya

The World Food Program sent food aid to eastern Libya for the first time this year to assist thousands of refugee families in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city.

The WFP said Friday that the food aid crossed via 16 trucks through the Libyan-Egyptian border, carrying enough food to feed 50,000 refugees for a whole month.

After crossing the border, the aid was delivered to warehouses owned by the state-run Libyan Humanitarian Relief Agency, which then distributed the aid.

“The World Food Program aims to support 243,000 refugees in Libya by distributing food over the next six months,” according to their website.

Aid from the WFP reached 75,000 people across Libya since the beginning of the year, but the distribution operations were stopped in March and April due to lack of funding.

The WFP is the food assistance branch of the United Nations.
