A series of blasts at a factory in China’s southern Guangdong Province left at least 17 people dead and 20 others wounded Wednesday.

The explosions at the Fuwa Engineering Manufacturing Co. Ltd in industrial Foshan city were heard at about 09.30 a.m. (01.30 a.m. GMT), state news agency Xinhua reported, citing Shunde District’s press office.

The 20 injured persons were rushed to nearby hospitals.

A worker who was located at least 1 kilometer away from the factory told Xinhua he had heard explosion noises.

Guangdong is among the country’s largest manufacturing areas.

In November, a fire at a carrot packaging factory in eastern Shandong province left at least 18 people dead and 13 others injured.
