Heavy rains brought life to a standstill in the Greek capital Athens Friday.

The fire brigade told Anadolu Agency that they received more than 500 emergency calls from Athens and its western suburbs.

“It is a miracle there are no casualties considering the rain caused cars to submerge in the water,” a firefighter told AA.

Three people were trapped in their drifting car and had to wait for the fire brigade to rescue them, the firefighter added.

The heavy rain started early morning and lasted several hours. Apart from wreaking havoc in the largest city of Greece, the worst-affected areas were in the western suburbs of Keratsini, Drapetsona, Nikea, Egaleo and Pireaus.
