The U.S. will bid to stage the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the country's Olympic Committee announced Tuesday

The cities of Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. are vying for candidacy.

"The United States Olympic Committee board of directors unanimously approved a U.S. bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games," a statement from the committee said Tuesday.

The U.S. is the third country after Germany and Italy to officially announce plans to bid for the 2024 edition of the Games. Turkey, France and Qatar have also been mentioned as possible contenders.

The International Olympic Committee’s deadline for bid submissions is September 2015, with the host city to be determined in 2017.

The last summer edition of the Games on U.S. soil was in Atlanta in 1996. St. Louis hosted them in 1904 and Los Angeles in both 1932 and 1984.

The U.S. hosted the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

"An entire generation of Americans has not had the opportunity to witness the amazing spectacle of (the) Olympic and Paralympic Games on home soil," said U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun.
