Kenyan athletes won back-to-back victories in the men's and woman's races in the 2014 London Marathon Sunday as world-record holder Wilson Kipsang and two-time runner-up Edna Kiplagat crossed the finish line first.

In the men's race, 32-year-old Kipsang won his second London marathon with a course record of 2hrs 4mins 29secs. He was followed by his compatriot and former Paris Marathon record holder Stanley Biwott with a time of 2hrs 4mins 55secs while last year’s winner Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia came third in 2hrs 6mins 30secs. Multiple Olympic gold medalist and London marathon debutant, Mo Farah, finished eighth, four minutes behind the winner.

Kenyan athletes also dominated the women's category too as Edna Kiplagat saw off the challenge of fellow Kenyan Florence Kiplagat with a late sprint to claim victory. Kiplagat finished the race in 2hrs 20mins 21secs only three seconds ahead of Florence Kiplagat. Former 10,000 m champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia came third in 2hrs 20mins 35secs in her first marathon race.

First run in 1981, the London Marathon is part of World Marathon Majors and is considered one of the most prestigious yearly marathon events worldwide.
