Iran seeks peace, stability in Syria: Rouhani

ANKARA

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed that he would put all his efforts into preventing a war over Syria while speaking at the Revolution Guard Commanders Conference in Iranian capital Tehran.

"The problem in Syria is not about one man or nation ruling a country, it is far beyond ithis. It is quite clear that the West is not happy with what happens in the region and is after certain plans in the region," said Rouhani.

Stating that the Iranian Revolution Guards are in favor of peace and security in the region, he added, "the West is mistaken in having a military plan against Iran. The thing behind our power in the region is not military power, but our superiority in entering dialogue," Rouhani said.

"If the West gives up on setting conspiracies in the region, the Revolution Guards will not aim to create a military dominance in the region."

Stating that Iran does need to intervene in any country in the region Rohani said, "They should leave the region and give up on Iranophobia. Our woe is for democracy. We value the will and views of the peoples of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Palestine and all other countries. All our efforts are for peace and stability in Syria. We appreciate whomever the Syrian people elected or voted for."

He added that the tension in Libya, Tunisia, Yemen and Bahrain were reflections of the plan pursued by the West.

- Nuclear program and sanction

Expressing that the region is passing through a very sensitive period, Rohani claimed that there are many conspiracies about Iran. He stated that western sanctions targeted the welfare of the people in Iran since they generally applied to oil and banking.

"The West knows very well that we are not after nuclear weapons. The greatest proof of this is the decree by our religious leader Khamenei declaring the production, trial and use of nuclear weapons as being forbidden. This is a clear sign that Iran is not after nuclear weapons, but peaceful nuclear technology," said Rohani.
