Turkey arrests 16 Daesh suspects near Syrian border

ANKARA

Sixteen foreigners suspected of belonging to Daesh have been arrested by Turkish security forces near the border with Syria, the military said Tuesday.

In a statement on its website, the Turkish General Staff said the suspects were apprehended in Kilis province on Monday as they attempted to cross the border to Daesh-controlled territory in Syria.

The statement did not specify the suspects’ nationalities.

In separate incidents involving PKK terrorists in southeast Turkey, the military said three terrorists were killed and weapons and ammunition seized in Hakkari province on Monday. Two other PKK terrorists were killed in another incident in Hakkari during an attack on security forces.

The PKK - designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU - renewed its armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July. Since then, more than 120 members of the security forces have been martyred and dozens of civilians killed by the group, according to the government.
