IGDIR, Turkey
A police officer was martyred on Tuesday while investigating two suspected Kurdish militants in Turkey’s eastern province of Igdir, local security sources said.
The officer, named as Olgun Kurbanoglu, was gunned down after he went to investigate a report of two suspicious men at a cafe in Karakoyun district, close to the Armenian border.
One of the suspects -- thought to belong to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) -- was wounded during the shootout.
Kurbanoglu was taken to Igdir State Hospital, where he died of his wounds.
Police have launched a search for the two suspects.
More than 60 Turkish police and soldiers have lost their lives in renewed violence between the Turkish state and the PKK -- which is deemed a terror organization in Turkey, the U.S. and EU, since late June.
