Turkey: Pro-Kurdish party official held in Agri

AGRI, Turkey

A Turkish court has ordered a local official of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in eastern Agri province to be kept under police custody on charges of working with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), security sources told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

According to sources within the provincial governor’s office and local police department, police held HDP District Chairman Engin Dursun after a car chase in the province.

Sources said Dursun was being accused of trying to hand over two people, identified by their initials M.Y. and B.Y., to the PKK.

Dursun and the two suspects, who were reportedly found in his car, were taken to the local police office, from where they were referred to the local court, the sources added.

Police charged Dursun with working on behalf of the PKK and the affiliated Kurdish Communities Union (KCK).

While the court ordered Dursun to be kept under custody, it ordered the release of M.Y. and B.Y under police supervision.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU.
