International Premier Tennis League kicks off on Friday

ANKARA

Tennis legends from the past and present will meet in four Asian countries to take part in the International Tennis Premier League, a tournament founded by former Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi in 2013.

The tournament is a unique team-based tennis league founded by multiple grand-slam winner Mahesh Bhupathi. The league will feature 21 Grand Slam Champions and 14 current and former World Number Ones.

The first city-based professional tennis league in the world will be played across four countries: India, the Philippines, Singapore and the United Arabs Emirates.

It will be played for 16 days from Nov. 28 to Dec. 13 and the winning team will walk away with prize money of $1 million.

The tournament will see 24 current and former tennis stars split into four groups.

Former stars competing in the competition include Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Carlos Moya and the current stars include Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams.

Over 80 players participated in the official draft held on March 2, 2014 in Dubai, and a total of 28 players were divided into the four franchise teams.

From Nov. 28 to Dec. 13, 2014, the teams will play a total of 24 matches in a round-robin format to determine the inaugural 2014 IPTL League Champion.

A round-robin tournament is where each team plays the other three in turn and the team that garners most points wins.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal withdrew from the International Premier Tennis League due to an injury leading the organizers to call upon Swiss legend Roger Federer to replace the injured Spaniard.
