FIBA to let athletes wear head covering in competitions

MIES, Switzerland

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on Tuesday agreed on allowing athletes who participate in basketball competitions to wear head covering for religious reasons on a two-year trial basis.

According to a press release made by FIBA at a meeting held in Mies district of Nyon, Switzerland, a two-year trial period will be instigated and a final decision will be permanently implemented either way after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Muslim and Sikh basketballers taking part in championships and in the Olympics requested a review of the rules as they consider the issue a discriminative one. The U.S. Olympic Committee and Indian government supported their request.

Up until now, FIBA regulations stipulate that it is forbidden to wear a cap or any kind of accessory or jewellery during the competitions. However, the International Basketball Federation allowed athletes wear a headband with a maximum width of five centimeters.
